Expo 2025 Osaka Pavilions Review — Visit 1: First Night as a Skeptic

Visited: May 2, 2025 | Evening Ticket (from 17:00) | East Gate Entry | Daily Visitors: 83,000

Looking for an honest Expo 2025 Osaka pavilions review from a first-time visitor? You’ve come to the right place.

What Is Expo 2025 Osaka?

Expo 2025 Osaka, officially known as the 2025 World Exposition, was held on Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay from April 13 to October 13, 2025. With the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” it welcomed pavilions from over 160 countries and organizations — making it one of the largest World Expos in history.

In this post, I share my honest first impressions from my very first evening visit — and how a single night turned a skeptic into a season pass holder.

My Goal: Review Every Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka

Over the course of multiple visits to Expo 2025 Osaka, I set myself a challenge — to visit and review every pavilion on the grounds. With over 160 countries and organizations represented, it was no small feat. But armed with a season pass and a genuine curiosity for what each country had to offer, I made it my mission.

This post covers Visit 1 (May 2) — the evening that started it all. Follow along as I work my way through every pavilion — the spectacular, the surprising, and the hidden gems most visitors never find.

First Impressions: Bigger and Better Than Expected

Before my first visit to Expo 2025 Osaka, I had serious doubts. Japanese media had been full of headlines calling it a “waste of tax money,” and rumors of poor organization were everywhere. Unconvinced, I chose the cheapest option available — an evening ticket — and entered through the East Gate at 5:00 PM on May 2, 2025.

What happened next completely changed my mind.

Stepping through the East Gate, I was immediately struck by the scale of the venue. The iconic Myaku-Myaku statue — the official mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka — towered above the entrance plaza, far more impressive in person than in any photo I had seen.

The Grand Roof Ring (大屋根リング), a massive wooden circular structure stretching 2 kilometers in diameter, dominated the skyline. As one of the most ambitious architectural projects in recent Japanese history, it served as both a symbol of the Expo and a practical connector between pavilions.

Pavilions I Visited on My First Evening

Despite arriving in the late afternoon, I managed to visit a remarkable number of Expo 2025 Osaka pavilions:

🇦🇪 UAE — An architectural showpiece reflecting the Gulf region’s vision for the future

🌏 ASEAN Pavilion — A collective showcase of Southeast Asian culture and innovation

🇰🇭 Cambodia — Intimate and beautifully presented

🇧🇩 Bangladesh — A warm and colorful display of culture

🇲🇾 Malaysia — Rich in natural imagery and national pride

🇱🇻🇱🇹🇪🇪 Baltic States — Surprisingly moving, a highlight of the evening

🇵🇪 Peru — Vibrant and full of energy

🇵🇹 Portugal — Caught a live outdoor performance that drew a joyful crowd

🇪🇸 Spain — Bold, theatrical, and one of the most memorable pavilions

🇲🇨 Monaco — Small but elegantly curated

🤖 Gundam Pavilion — The iconic exterior alone was worth seeing

💡 Tip: Evening tickets offer surprisingly good value — many of these Expo 2025 Osaka pavilions had shorter queues after 5 PM than during peak daytime hours.

Unexpected Highlights: The Human Side of Expo 2025 Osaka

One of the most memorable moments of the evening wasn’t inside any pavilion — it was a spontaneous Awa Odori performance in one of the open plazas. Dancers in traditional costumes pulled strangers into the rhythm, and for a few minutes, people from dozens of different countries were laughing and moving together.

These unscripted moments reminded me that Expo 2025 Osaka wasn’t just an exhibition of technology and design — it was a celebration of what connects us as human beings. It is one of the most unique things to do in Osaka that I have ever experienced.

The Grand Finale: Night Show at Expo 2025 Osaka

As darkness fell over Yumeshima, the venue transformed. The night show — featuring dramatic fountain displays, laser projections, and a breathtaking drone performance above the Grand Roof Ring — was the perfect ending to an evening I hadn’t expected to enjoy.

💡 Tip: Stay for the night show — it is one of the best free experiences at Expo 2025 Osaka and should not be missed regardless of which ticket type you have.

Tips for Visiting Expo 2025 Osaka in the Evening

🎟 Evening tickets are great value — Many Expo 2025 Osaka pavilions are accessible with shorter waits after 5 PM

🚪 Start at the East Gate — Easy access and close to several major pavilions

🌙 Stay for the night show — Absolutely worth it, don’t leave early

👟 Wear comfortable shoes — The venue is enormous

Is Expo 2025 Osaka Worth Visiting? — Final Thoughts

I arrived as a skeptic with the cheapest ticket available. I left as a true believer — and went straight home to purchase a season pass for the remaining months of Expo 2025 Osaka.

With over 160 pavilions and countless events still unseen, half a year of visits suddenly felt not just reasonable, but essential. If you are wondering whether Expo 2025 Osaka is worth visiting — one evening was enough to answer that question for me.

This is Visit 1 in my ongoing series to review every pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. Next up: Visit 2 — 15 pavilions in one day.
